Bullying and Harassment Policy
Last reviewed: 06/08/2025
1. Statement of Commitment
Underwhelming Adventures is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all clients, participants, staff, and contractors. Bullying, harassment, and any form of discriminatory behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
We believe everyone has the right to access outdoor and adventure activities without fear of intimidation, prejudice, or emotional harm, especially individuals with Additional Support Needs (ASN) who may be more vulnerable to exclusion or mistreatment.
2. Scope
- All clients, including minors and adults with ASN
- All instructors, including freelancers and volunteers
- All locations, whether indoor climbing centres, outdoor venues, or snow sports facilities
- All modes of interaction, including verbal, physical, written, and online communication
3. Definitions
- Bullying: repeated negative behaviour - verbal, physical, or psychological - intended to intimidate, belittle, or isolate an individual.
- Harassment: unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic (for example disability, gender, race, religion, sexuality) that creates a hostile, degrading, or offensive environment.
- Discriminatory language or conduct: includes slurs, jokes, exclusionary behaviour, or assumptions based on someone’s identity or access needs.
4. Prevention and Culture
- Positive role modelling by instructors
- Proactive inclusion strategies in group delivery
- Clear behavioural expectations set during session introductions
- Adjusted communication styles to meet diverse participant needs
- Enabling clients to disclose concerns privately and safely
5. Reporting and Response
Any reports or observations of bullying or harassment will be:
- Taken seriously and handled with discretion
- Recorded in writing (with dates, context, and witnesses where possible)
- Investigated promptly by the Director or session leader
- Addressed with proportionate action, up to and including:
- Terminating participation in a session
- Ending contractor engagement
- Referring to safeguarding authorities if a vulnerable person is at risk
Clients will always be supported if they report bullying, including through adapted communication, additional supervision, or support contacting guardians or carers.
6. Children and Vulnerable Adults
For under-18s or adults with care needs, any instance of bullying is also treated as a potential safeguarding concern and will follow procedures in line with our Safeguarding Policy. This may include contacting parents, guardians, or external services.
7. Review
This policy is reviewed periodically or following any reported incident. Revisions will reflect evolving good practice in safeguarding and inclusive delivery.
